Five Days in the West of England

I had the opportunity to spend a long weekend in Bristol, England preceeding a W3C Semantic Web Best Practices & Deployment Working Group face-to-face meeting (I suspect that words in organization titles are like keys; the greater the number you have, the less important you are).  The story is here and the photos are here.

    Re: lack of waste bins at the airport.
    You will also find they are missing from most railway stations as well. The reason goes back a few years. Back in the 70's and 80's, there was a spate of bomb attacks by various organisations, but largely the IRA and it's splinter groups. A tactic that was used more than once was to disguise a bomb as trash, and innocently drop it in a waste bin. The authorities eventually responded to this tactic by removing the waste bins in high-profile target areas, like airports and train stations. Dealing with terror threats is not a new phenomenon, unfortunately.

    By the way, it's "Cotswolds", not "Cottswalds". Lovely part of the world. I used to live between Cirencester and Northleach.
